Business Translation

You put a lot of time and effort in writing original documents. You don't want to lose all of that work when you have it translated.

It’s funny when other people get translation wrong…

And it’s not just the little people you get ‘Lost in Translation’, here are a few examples of the big boys getting things disastrously wrong:

When Kentucky Fried Chicken translated their slogan “Finger likin’ good” into Chinese it came out as “Eat your fingers off”

In Italy, a campaign for Schweppes Tonic Water translated the name into Schweppes Toilet Water.

When General Motors introduced the Chevy Nova in South America, it was apparently unaware that "no va" means "it won't go."

…we’ll make sure it doesn’t happen to you.

You’ve got to admit that they are funny, but you don’t want to be the one to be laughed at.

So, ensuring your marketing material is translated accurately is critical. Not just for your company or your clients it’s vital for your career.

To avoid mis-translation, we only use qualified in country translators. They know the local market and its customs. This ensures that your adverts and promotions have the desired effect when localised into your target language.

Cultural relations

In spite of the language barriers, there has been a slight increase in academic exchange since 1995 under the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) scholarship programme. Interest is particularly keen in scholarships for advanced courses granted to young graduates from developing countries with professional experience. More than 300 Mauritanians are currently studying at German institutes of higher education (mainly technical subjects).

Mauritanian radio has been promoted in the past through a Technical Cooperation project (rural broadcasting) and cooperates with Deutsche Welle. In May 2000, a film use agreement was concluded between Deutsche Welle and Télévision de Mauritanie (100 tv programme hours each year). Mauritania's young and vibrant private press received German commodity aid until 1998. Following a request by the Mauritanian side, a further-training course was held in Nouakchott in March/April 2001 for the first time for Mauritanian broadcasters at Deutsche Welle’s Radio Training Centre (Rural Radio Workshop). This was followed by a three-week workshop for trainers in digital broadcasting in September/October 2002 and in March/April 2003 in close cooperation with Radio Mauritanie. Since 1998, the German Embassy – the first anywhere in the world – has rebroadcast Deutsche Welle TV programmes in the municipality of Nouakchott. In February 1997, dpa and the Mauritanian news agency AMI concluded a cooperation agreement.

Reporting on Germany in the Mauritanian media is always affirmative. Deutsche Welle's French and Arabic language broadcasts also contribute to Germany's good image.

Under sports promotion, Mauritanian coaches receive training in Germany (courses for sports coaches at the University of Leipzig and at Hennef Sports Academy – two trainers in 2003, one for basketball and one for volleyball). The Embassy in Nouakchott consistently promotes youth sport in the country by donating sports equipment provided by the Federal Foreign Office.

In September 2005, the German Embassy in Nouakchott resumed its German language courses. The participants of the first German course received their diplomas from the German Ambassador in Mauritania at a special ceremony. The German courses are becoming increasingly popular.
