Business Translation

You put a lot of time and effort in writing original documents. You don't want to lose all of that work when you have it translated.

It’s funny when other people get translation wrong…

And it’s not just the little people you get ‘Lost in Translation’, here are a few examples of the big boys getting things disastrously wrong:

When Kentucky Fried Chicken translated their slogan “Finger likin’ good” into Chinese it came out as “Eat your fingers off”

In Italy, a campaign for Schweppes Tonic Water translated the name into Schweppes Toilet Water.

When General Motors introduced the Chevy Nova in South America, it was apparently unaware that "no va" means "it won't go."

…we’ll make sure it doesn’t happen to you.

You’ve got to admit that they are funny, but you don’t want to be the one to be laughed at.

So, ensuring your marketing material is translated accurately is critical. Not just for your company or your clients it’s vital for your career.

To avoid mis-translation, we only use qualified in country translators. They know the local market and its customs. This ensures that your adverts and promotions have the desired effect when localised into your target language.

There are numerous cooperative partnerships between German and Hungarian universities, colleges and schools. University partnerships and German-language courses ensure a lively academic exchange between the two countries. The foundation of the German-language Andrássy University which, in its capacity as a Hungarian postgraduate education institution, is to attract up to 150 high-flyers from the German-speaking and Central Eastern European countries, is a particularly promising approach. It is the first German-language university to be newly established outside the German-speaking world. President Rau officially opened it in the autumn of 2002. The disciplines taught are political science and law, international relations, economics and cultural studies. On behalf of the German Government (470,000 euro until 2006), but particularly also Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria (1.25 million euro each until 2007), the DAAD is providing valuable support for this project. Andrássy University awarded the first degrees in autumn 2004 and is endeavouring to create a PhD school.

The Goethe Institute in Budapest organizes a wide range of cultural events, often in collaboration with Hungarian and international partners, which includes exhibitions, films, readings and discussions. The Goethe Institute also supports cultural events and libraries in other Hungarian cities. A cultural manager funded by the Robert Bosch Foundation and the Federal Foreign Office has been working in Pécs/Fünfkirchen since the summer of 2004.

One important element of cultural exchange which must not be forgotten is literature. Since the Frankfurt Book Fair in 1999 at which Hungary was the Guest of Honour, many authors such as Péter Esterházy, Péter Nádas, György Konrád and Imre Kertész have enjoyed recurring success in Germany. Imre Kertész learned that he was to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2002 while attending the Institute for Advanced Study in Berlin on a one-year fellowship. At the end of April 2004, Germany was the Guest of Honour at the XIth Budapest International Book Festival which involved an extensive supporting programme and attracted considerable media interest. The award of the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade to Péter Esterházy at the Frankfurt Book Fair in the autumn of 2004 made this year the high point so far in bilateral relations in the sphere of literature.
